N-SIGHT is a decision-support web application developed at the University of Nebraska to advance in-season nitrogen management. It leverages UAV and satellite imagery together with field-level treatment data to provide real-time insights into nitrogen use efficiency.

The University of Nebraska aims to simplify and improve effective and efficient application of nitrogen management. The development of the N-SIGHT tool is set to provide practical and user-friendly information corn growers can use to tackle this challenge.

The N-SIGHT web-based tool brings together data to show nitrogen treatment, crop sufficiency, and yield information in maps, graphs, and tables. Developed at the University of Nebraska, N-SIGHT helps evaluate nitrogen management during the growing season using field data, UAV and satellite imagery, and the Sufficiency Index.

N-SIGHT addresses the limitations of traditional nitrogen management, which often relies on making decisions before planting and may not account for changing crop conditions. The tool is being tested with data from University of Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC) fields and is designed for use by researchers, Extension specialists, farmers, crop consultants, students, and educators.

The N-SIGHT development team, led by Chathurika Narayana under the supervision of Dr. Joe Luck, has incorporated high-resolution UAV imagery and planet satellite imagery into the system. The resulting Sufficiency Index maps can help identify areas of a field that are likely sufficient in nitrogen and areas where deficiency may be present.

Read the full story to learn about the development of N-SIGHT, how the imagery and data are processed, and how the tool can be used to evaluate nitrogen management.
